Commissioning a Painting is one way to go the extra mile for a milestone birthday.

With a bespoke painting created especially for you, you can bring your favourite places and special memories to life as a stunning back drop for your home.

For Phil and his wife there’s a special walk near their home along the sandy beaches of Broadsands Beach in North Devon they wanted me to capture in the glorious sunset light to mark her 40th birthday.

It was a large commission too at 120 x 90 cm - perfect to fill their large lounge wall with vibrant colour.

My wife is an artist and is fascinated by how people capture light in paintings. Rachel does this in an amazing way and is one of Danielle’s favourite artists so naturally when a milestone birthday came around I got in touch about a commission. Danielle’s painting now hangs in pride of place in our lounge where we can now see one of our favourite sunset views anytime we like.

#1 Sharing The Idea for Broadsands Beach

“We communicated first through Rachel’s Instagram, then by email and shared ideas for the painting, with helpful guidance and suggestions made to help the finished piece even better.”

First off, Phil shared a couple of photographs of the specific scene he wanted captured along with some other sunset photos I could use to help me make more of the sun and clouds. It also gave me a good idea of the type of light he wanted too.

#2 Getting On The Same Page

I usually ask for 3-5 paintings of mine that you’d like your painting to be inspired by. It helps with our conversation and gives me an idea of how you’d like your painting painted.

Phil shared a few where he picked out specifically what they loved:

  • The autumnal colour palette & warm light

  • Flowers in the foreground

  • The brushwork to create the rocks & waves

#3 The Finishing Touches

Once a painting commission is complete, I send a final photograph to make sure you're happy. We can also discuss framing and any other requirements you might have too.

For this piece Phil & Danielle wanted to travel from Devon to see my exhibition at “Enys Gardens Bluebell Festival” and collect their new painting. It was a lovely moment to witness Danielle’s face from the other end of the room when she first saw her new painting. Having not actually met in person I didn’t know who to look out for in the crowds of people viewing the exhibition, but her reaction gave her away!
